Posted: April 19, 2006 Subject: Young Brothers Aloha! Please read the letter [below] from Young Brothers to their customers. In this letter, they announce their plans to discontinue LCL shipments to Maui beginning January 1, 2007. As Cal Hono ships frozen and chill containers weekly to Maui directly from our Southern California terminal on the Saturday vessel, this should have minimal effect. However, we will be exploring our options of possibly consolidating containers in Honolulu for shipment to the Neighbor Islands in the event that this service change may expand to other islands in the future. Mahalo for your continued loyal support of our service! — Jim Zant, Cal Hono
———————————————————————— Young Brothers, Limited. PO Box 3288. Honolulu, HI 96801. Phone (808) 543-9311 Friday April 14, 2006 Dear Valued Customer: RE: MAUI LESS THAN CONTAINER LOAD (LCL) SERVICE CHANGES Young Brothers is planning on making changes to our operations affecting customers who ship less than container load (LCL) cargo to and from the port of Kahului, Maui. It is very important that we keep you, our valued customer informed of our proposed changes. Here are some facts to help you understand the proposed changes: • YB filed an application with the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) on Thursday April 13th to discontinue LCL service to and from Maui in January 2007. • This change does not take effect until January 1st 2007 at the earliest and must first be approved by the PUC. YB has asked for PUC approval by June 1, 2006. • The request to discontinue LCL service is ONLY for cargo to and from Maui. • YB will let you know via email, website notices, and/or press releases when the PUC has responded to our filing. • When the PUC has approved the request, LCL cargo to and from Maui will have to be consolidated. YB will be available to assist you in determining how this consolidation can be accomplished. • What are your options? o Work with a commercial freight consolidator to consolidate your cargo for shipment. ▪ Rates will be determined by commercial freight consolidators. o Containerize your own cargo at your facility. ▪ Rates will be determined pursuant to YB’s tariff. • The type of cargo YB accepts will not change to and from Maui only the manner in which we receive it. YB will only accept full container loads, flatracks, platforms, automobiles, rollon/ roll-off, and over-sized cargoes to and from Maui. • YB is asking the PUC to discontinue LCL freight in Maui due to the following reasons: o YB’s Kahului facility has exceeded its capacity. o The projected growth of the freight to and from Maui will continue to place demands on the facility. o A portion of YB’s Kahului facility will be reallocated to Hawaii Superferry’s operation in 2007. o Consolidation of LCL freight offsite in Maui will free up critical space. • Full G-Vans to and from Maui are allowed but must be loaded and unloaded at customers’ facilities. • Van-packs to and from Maui are allowed as long as they are tendered to YB in a container. • Canoes and Livestock to and from Maui will continue to be handled as they are today. • Motorcycles to be moved in a full container load may still be loaded at the pier. Loose or palletized motorcycles must be containerized prior to arriving at the pier. • Transshipments of LCL cargo between Maui and the Neighbor Islands must be consolidated. Once again, we will keep you apprised of the status of YB’s request to the PUC and will make every effort to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. These changes will provide additional service options on how LCL cargo will be moved in the future.
