Subject:  Matson Decreasing Fuel Surcharge by Four Percentage Points for Hawaii, Guam/CNMI and Micronesia Services

As a result of recent declines in bunker fuel prices, Matson announced today that it is decreasing its fuel surcharge by four percentage points, from 28 to 24 percent for its Hawaii service, and from 29.5 to 25.5 percent for its Guam/CNMI and Micronesia service, effective October 4.

"Matson is very pleased to make this downward adjustment to its fuel surcharge," said Dave Hoppes, senior vice president, ocean services. "While we were able to make six consecutive decreases in 2008, the trend moved back upward in 2009. Matson has made a practice of giving 30 days notice of rate adjustments, however we are once again passing on this decrease to our customers as soon as possible so that they can quickly realize the benefits of this reduction during this difficult economic environment. For most customers, this decrease represents a reduction in shipping costs ranging from $100 to $150 per container. We will continue to monitor fuel costs and adjust the surcharge accordingly."

Matson's last adjustment to its fuel surcharge was an increase of eight percentage points for its Hawaii, Guam/CNMI and Micronesia services, effective July 5.
