i-Warehouse
An FSIS Import Warehouse (“i-Warehouse”) is authorized to receive and store imported meat, poultry, or processed egg products for reinspection. Before these imported products can enter U.S. commerce, they must be presented at an official import inspection establishment where FSIS inspectors verify that the products meet U.S. food safety standards.
-
Protect Public Health: Inspection ensures that imported products are free from harmful pathogens, contaminants, and residues, keeping consumers safe.
-
Verify Compliance with U.S. Standards: Imported products must meet the same safety, quality, and labeling standards as domestically produced items to ensure consistency.
-
Prevent Entry of Unsafe Products: Inspections help detect and stop the import of adulterated, spoiled, or damaged products before they reach consumers.
-
Support Fair Trade Practices: Inspections verify that products are correctly labeled and free from economic adulteration or misrepresentation, maintaining trust in the market.
-
Traceability and Accountability: Inspection provides documentation and tracking, allowing for quicker responses to issues like recalls or outbreaks, protecting both consumers and the food supply chain.
Overall, inspection is essential to ensure food safety, quality, and consumer confidence in imported products.
-
Mandatory Reinspection: All imported meat, poultry, and egg products must be reinspected by FSIS before entering U.S. commerce.
-
Documentation Review: Verify the eligibility of the importing country and establishment through documentation.
-
Physical Examination: Inspect products and packaging for signs of contamination, damage, or spoilage.
-
Labeling Compliance: Ensure labels meet U.S. regulations regarding content and language.
-
Risk-Based Sampling: Conduct laboratory testing for pathogens and residues based on risk assessment.
-
Release of Products: Products that pass inspection are released into commerce with the FSIS mark of inspection.
-
Disposition of Refused Products: Products that fail inspection are re-imported, destroyed, or converted to non-food use under FSIS supervision.
